Though Proud Mary was met with mixed reviews, some good and some not that great, I enjoyed every bit of the movie. It was so nice to see our lovely Taraji P. Henson take on another role besides the ones she is known for. The world has gotten so used to her playing the role of a wife, girlfriend or mother that has the world’s problems to contend with. It was so awesome to see her in a totally different light. She was action filled from start to finish, defeating all the bad guys to become the only man standing, “go Taraji”.
I really loved seeing her in this light and wish to see her playing more roles like this. Taraji is no action star and this made the movie all the better, she was unique and distinct, fitting seamlessly into character.
Taraji P. Henson, played Mary, a member of a Drug Cartel . Benny the Don of the Cartel, adopted Mary when she was little, equipping her with a skills set and an education that will see that she serves him till her death. Mary has a brief romance with Tom, Don’s son. She ended things with him and this did not go down well with Tom, who loved her deeply and wanted to remain together.
Mary was sent on a mission, to kill a member of a rival cartel, but developed sympathy after the deed was carried out, when she found that she had killed a man that had a son, thereby rendering his child fatherless. She knew she had to set things right and the only way she knew how was by protecting the boy. She saved him from being killed, took out his uncles and others guarding him. With this, she became a target of two dangerous Cartels.
The action and fighting scenes lasted all through the movie making it quite difficult to get bored at any given point in time. The highlight of this movie was when Mary needed to quit at the tail end and she was stopped by Don Benny, she took him out and everyone who wanted to stop her. The last action scene was the best at a point it looked unrealistic how just one woman could kill so many men.
Proud Mary was really good and seeing my dear Taraji take up a new role, was amazing. It was worth my while. The climax was unexpected, I didn’t expect Mary to be triumphant in the end. Her connection with the boy and the tears in her eyes as she went about her work, made it look so real. I will give this 7.5 out of 10. I really liked it !
