As the Boshin War rages, the Shibata domain finds itself caught between the crumbling shogunate and the rising Imperial forces. In a bid for survival, the domain’s leaders secretly plan to defect to the Imperial side. However, with shogunate forces already present in their castle, the Shibata elders devise a desperate strategy: recruit condemned criminals to hold off the Imperial army at a remote fortress, buying time for their political maneuvering.
Eleven prisoners, each facing execution for various crimes, are offered a grim choice: die now or fight for the Shibata domain with the promise of freedom if they survive. Among them is Masa (played by Takayuki Yamada), a laborer sentenced for killing a samurai who assaulted his wife. Another key figure is Heishiro Washio (Taiga Nakano), an idealistic samurai who becomes the de facto leader of the group. Despite their differences, the group unites under the common goal of survival and potential redemption.

The newly formed squad is dispatched to a mountain pass fortress, a strategic point crucial to halting the Imperial army’s advance. Facing overwhelming odds, the rebels employ guerrilla tactics, utilizing their unique skills and knowledge of the terrain. The battles are brutal and unrelenting, with the film showcasing intense swordplay, explosive traps, and visceral combat sequences.
As the siege intensifies, tensions within the group surface. Masa remains skeptical of the Shibata domain’s intentions, suspecting that their mission is a mere diversion. Heishiro, driven by a sense of honor, attempts to maintain cohesion among the rebels. The film delves into the personal histories of the convicts, exploring themes of betrayal, guilt, and the quest for redemption.
