The Sand Castle is a 2024 Arabic-language fantasy thriller directed by Matty Brown, co-written with Hend Fakhroo and Yassmina Karajah. The film stars Nadine Labaki, Ziad Bakri, and siblings Zain and Riman Al Rafeea. It premiered at the Red Sea International Film Festival in December 2024 and was released globally on Netflix in January 2025.
The film opens with a couple Yasmine and Nabil and their children (Adam and Jana), arriving on a seemingly happy, uninhabited island after fleeing an unspecified calamity in their homeland. They find shelter in an abandoned lighthouse and attempt to survive by rationing limited supplies while awaiting rescue.

As time passes, the family’s dynamics begin to strain under the pressure of isolation. Adam becomes anxious and confrontational about their survival prospects, while Jana retreats into her imagination as a coping mechanism. The discovery of a body bag near the shore and a radio broadcast about migrants drowning further accentuate their dire situation.
Jana constructs a sandcastle near the shore, symbolising her inner world and values. The film employs surreal imagery, including dream sequences where Jana navigates through haunting landscapes, reflecting her psychological state. The narrative’s linear progression becomes indistinct, emphasising the allegorical nature of the story.
Eventually, it’s revealed that the island and lighthouse exist only in Jana’s mind. In reality, she is alone in a lifeboat, fleeing a war-torn country. This twist reframes earlier events as elements of an imaginative construct designed to shield her from the harsh realities of her situation.

The film concludes by highlighting the experiences of children affected by armed conflict and their reliance on imagination to manage trauma. It offers a poignant study of resilience and the psychological responses to extreme circumstances.
