As a boy, Carl idolizes explorer Charles Muntz. He meets Ellie, who shares his dream of traveling to Paradise Falls. They marry, dream together, face recurrent miscarriages, and save diligently only for Ellie to fall ill and pass away before they can go.
Carl becomes isolated, stubbornly clinging to their cluttered house even as urban development pressures him away. Ordered into a retirement facility after accidentally injuring a worker, Carl refuses to leave so he pins thousands of balloons to his house and flies off to South America.

Accidentally brought along is Russell, a chatty Wilderness Explorer trying to earn his “Assisting the Elderly” badge. After a rough flight to the tepui, they meet Dug, an eager Golden Retriever with a speech collar, and Kevin, a rare bird Russell names (she’s female). Their journey is disrupted when stuffed animal Muntz appears, revealing his obsession: to capture Kevin to reclaim his explorer status. When they resist, he reveals he has killed other explorers then sets fire to destroy their home.
Carl freezes amid chaos but rediscovers purpose by revisiting Ellie’s scrapbook which reads: “Thanks for the adventure—now go have a new one.” He cuts loose the house and pursues them. In a heartfelt rescue, Russell flies to save Dug and Kevin using balloons, and Carl boards Muntz’s dirigible. After a climactic fight, Muntz dies in the balloon apocalypse, and Carl, Russell, and companions escape.

They return Kevin to her chicks, marking Carl’s growth from grumpy to caring grandpa figure to Russell culminating in Carl awarding Russell the “Ellie Badge.” The final scene shows their house perched overlooking Paradise Falls: a tribute to the past, a beacon of new beginnings.
