The story begins in a futuristic kingdom that resembles a fusion of medieval castles and neon-lit sci-fi skylines. Here, knights aren’t just armored warriors they’re celebrity guardians of law and order, trained to protect the people and uphold the Institution.
Among them is Sir Ballister Boldheart, an outsider knight who clawed his way to recognition despite not being born into nobility.

His crowning day, the knighting ceremony, should cement his honor until it becomes his downfall. In the blink of an eye, a shocking assassination happens, and the blame is pinned squarely on him. Branded a traitor, Ballister’s world collapses.
It’s in the shadows of this disgrace that Nimona explodes into his life. She’s a whirlwind punkish, loud, unfiltered, and most importantly, a shapeshifter. One moment she’s a teen with a wicked grin, the next she’s a raging rhino smashing through walls, or a fierce dragon scorching the skies.

She insists on becoming his “villainous sidekick,” seeing his exile as the perfect chance to unleash chaos on the very system that rejected her. Ballister resists at first, a man still clinging to knightly ideals but Nimona’s irreverent energy is impossible to contain.
Together, they form an unlikely alliance. Their journey begins with chaotic antics: Nimona gleefully shifting into animals to spook guards, smashing through patrols, and constantly pushing Ballister’s patience. Yet beneath her manic humor, cracks of vulnerability emerge. She isn’t just rebelling for fun, her shapeshifting is tied to her identity, her refusal to be boxed in by a society that fears difference.

As they plot to expose the real culprits behind the assassination, Ballister starts to see the Institution’s corruption with clearer eyes. Their adventures spiral through daring heists, break-ins of high-tech fortresses, and narrow escapes from mechanical enforcers. Along the way, Ballister’s old ally and former lover; Ambrosius Goldenloin is torn between his loyalty to the Institution and his lingering bond with Ballister. Their encounters bristle with unspoken tension, the weight of betrayal and love mixing into every sword clash.

The emotional heart of the film beats strongest in quiet moments. In one scene, Nimona confides her deepest wound: she’s been hunted and misunderstood her whole life, labeled a monster simply because she doesn’t fit the world’s rigid boxes. Her transformations aren’t a trick, they’re who she is. And when society calls her dangerous, she leans into it, masking pain with defiance. Ballister, who knows what it’s like to be cast out, becomes the first person to truly listen, not just look.
The final act erupts in a storm of chaos and revelation. The Institution’s true corruption is laid bare, but Nimona cornered and enraged embraces her most powerful, terrifying form. Towering and unstoppable, she risks becoming the very monster people accused her of being. Ballister is faced with his greatest test: not a battle of swords, but of faith. He steps forward, not to fight, but to reach her, to remind her that she is seen, accepted, and not alone.
