Lainy Newton is a schoolteacher in her 40s. She feels invisible. Her friends and colleagues are moving on in life. They get married, have babies, and get promotions. Lainy feels left behind. When her best friend Kate announces her pregnancy, Lainy feels jealous and sad. She wants attention. She wants people to notice her. She decides to wear a fake pregnancy belly.

At first, it works. People treat her differently. They praise her. They ask questions. She meets Josh (Will Forte), a kind man who likes her. Lainy has to hide the truth from friends, family, and coworkers. The lie grows bigger. She attends prenatal classes, pretends to feel baby movements, and even fakes doctor appointments. Mistakes happen. She trips. She spills things. Friends almost see her secret.

The story shows Lainy’s emotions. She feels guilt, fear, and excitement. She also laughs at her mistakes. Her friends notice she is different. Kate becomes suspicious. Lainy realizes that pretending is stressful and tiring. She learns the lie cannot last.

Then, it appens at a large baby shower. Lainy confesses. Everyone is shocked. Some are angry. Some forgive her. Lainy feels relief and shame. She begins to understand that honesty is better than pretending. She starts a real relationship with Josh. She feels more confident. The movie ends with laughter, hope, and Lainy feeling proud of herself. The story shows that pretending may bring attention, but truth brings peace and happiness.
