Upcoming YouTube Movie: Girls Hostel

4 Min Read

Boarding school was never just about classes and curfews. It was a world of its own; shared
rooms, intense friendships, unspoken rules, and moments that shaped who we became. For
many, it was unforgettable. For some, it was complicated. And for others, it held secrets that
were never fully explained.

Premiering on February 13, a new YouTube series titled Girls Hostel revisits this familiar terrain,
blending the warmth of boarding school nostalgia with a subtle thread of mystery that keeps
viewers leaning in.

From the Minds Behind Evolving Light Studios

Girls Hostel is created and produced by Bolu Essien and Emmanuel Essien under Evolving
Light Studios, with direction by Olubunmi Akingbola.

The producers are known for projects such as the Netflix dramedy series – Becoming Abi and
the viral comedy series Salon 001, and other screen works that showcase their range, from
emotionally grounded drama to culturally resonant, relatable storytelling. Their work consistently
centres authentic characters and everyday experiences, positioning Evolving Light Studios as
part of a new generation of African storytellers shaping digital film and series content.

With Girls Hostel, the team returns to a familiar setting to tell a layered story that blends
memory, emotion, and mystery.

At its core, Girls Hostel captures everyday life inside a girls’ boarding school; the laughter, the
gossip, the rivalries, and the emotional bonds that form when young people live closely
together. The series mirrors experiences many viewers recognize instantly, especially those
who grew up within African boarding school systems.
But this is not just a nostalgic walk down memory lane.

As the story unfolds, routine school life begins to crack, revealing hidden tensions, unanswered
questions, and events that suggest not everything happening within the hostel walls is as
innocent as it seems. The girls are not only navigating adolescence and friendship, but also
confronting mysteries that challenge their understanding of trust and loyalty.

The series features a strong ensemble cast that adds depth and authenticity to the story. Girls
Hostel stars Bolu Essien alongside Onyinye Odokoro, Aderonke Adepoju, Eva Ibiam, Darasimi
Ogbetah, Inem King, Miriam Peters, Remi Surutu, and Toyin Alausa, with appearances from
other talented actors.

Together, the cast brings the emotional intensity, humour, vulnerability, and tension of hostel life
to the screen; making the characters feel real, familiar, and deeply human.

What sets Girls Hostel apart is its balance. The series leans into coming-of-age storytelling
while allowing suspense to build quietly in the background. It explores:
● The intensity of teenage friendships formed in close spaces
● Power dynamics and social hierarchies within hostel life
● The emotional weight of secrets; both shared and concealed
● The discomfort of realizing that some truths have been hidden for a reason

Each episode peels back another layer, drawing viewers deeper into a story that feels personal,
relatable, and quietly unsettling.

Beyond its storyline, Girls Hostel reflects the continued evolution of African storytelling in digital
spaces. It speaks to the rise of African web series, youth-focused narratives, and the creative
freedom digital platforms provide.
