Shanty Town – Netflix Movie Review

3 Min Read

A raw, unapologetic dive into the Lagos underworld, Shanty Town captures the brutal intersection of politics, crime, and survival, all centered in the slum settlement from which the film takes its name.

The movie opens in the bustling yet dangerous shanty community, a world of makeshift homes and unforgiving realities. Here, Scar, a notorious crime boss, controls the streets with an iron fist. His empire thrives on illegal businesses, drugs, and human exploitation.

At the heart of his operation are women trapped in sex work, bonded to him under false promises of freedom. Inem, one of the women, is shown plotting a daring escape with her twin sister. From the very beginning, the film sets the tone: no one leaves the shanty easily, and Scar’s enemies rarely live long enough to try again.

As the plot unfolds, layers of corruption are revealed. Scar’s reach extends far beyond the slum, he is protected by political figures who use his influence to control votes and silence rivals. The women of the shanty slowly form a hidden alliance, determined to break free from their captivity. Their struggle is marked by moments of betrayal, as some who claim to fight with them are secretly feeding Scar information.

The violence escalates when Scar faces opposition from rival gangs and pressure from politicians who feel he has become too ambitious. His paranoia grows, and so does his brutality. The women, led by Inem and supported by her sister’s cunning, navigate this chaos carefully. Each step toward their freedom is laced with bloodshed and sacrifice.
