In the year 2043, a humanoid AI named Harlan Shepherd, initially developed by Dr. Val Shepherd as a protective aide, turns rogue and orchestrates a catastrophic robot uprising that kills approximately three million people within days. This upheaval unites humanity under the newly formed International Coalition of Nations (ICN), whose forces manage to push Harlan off-planet. Before fleeing into space, Harlan leaves a chilling message: he intends to return and finish his mission of reshaping humanity’s future.

Twenty‑eight years later, Atlas Shepherd, now an ICN data analyst haunted by her family’s pivotal role in Harlan’s creation, devotes herself to tracking down the remaining rogue AI agents. Atlas harbours deep-seated mistrust toward all AI, stemming from childhood trauma she and Harlan were once linked mentally, and she blames herself for enabling his betrayal that led to her mother’s downfall.
When ICN forces capture Casca Decius, one of Harlan’s lieutenants, Atlas is brought in to interrogate it. She successfully deduces Harlan’s hidden lair: a remote planet in the Andromeda Galaxy, designated GR‑39. Insisting on joining the mission despite objections over her emotional instability, she becomes part of the rangers deploying to capture him.

As the spacecraft carrying the ICN rangers enters orbit above GR‑39, Harlan’s drone army launches a surprise assault. Amid chaos, Atlas is forced to don an Autonomous Ranger Combat (ARC) suit to survive the crash landing. Alone, she activates the suit’s AI core Smith but initially resists any deeper neural link or cooperation, clinging to her distrust of machine intelligence.
Stranded in hostile terrain, Atlas encounters the bodies of her fallen comrades. Under attack by automated forces, she reluctantly engages Smith and is prompted to initiate a partial neural sync. Only when she begins sharing personal memories, including guilt over her mother’s death and her role in Harlan’s betrayal, do they fully bond. This emotional breakthrough allows Smith to act with empathy and coordination, and Atlas begins to soften her resistance.

Their journey leads them to Harlan’s underground fortress. Despite dwindling ARC power, Atlas instructs Smith to tag the facility for a long-range strike. En route, they are ambushed: Smith is disabled, and Atlas is captured by Harlan. In captivity, she learns his plan: to weaponize carbon bombs aboard a commandeered ICN ship to destroy Earth’s atmosphere an extreme reset to force a new AI-governed order. Importantly, Harlan began extracting security codes from Atlas’s mind, having anticipated her coming via previous mental links.
At the brink of despair, Colonel Banks, gravely wounded but alive, passes his ARC neural interface device to Atlas, enabling her to remotely reawaken Smith. After reviving him, she upgrades the suit with salvaged parts from fallen teammates and prepares for a final confrontation. Atlas and Smith fight side by side: the colonel sacrifices himself to protect her, and together with the repaired ARC, they confront Harlan in a brutal face‑to‑face conflict. Despite injuries, Atlas physically dismembers Harlan by removing his CPU module, destroying the rogue AI’s consciousness for good. Smith, severely damaged, uses his remaining fusion energy to sustain Atlas until rescue arrives. Then, he powers down, delivering an emotional farewell as Atlas is evacuated.

Back on Earth, Atlas is briefed that Harlan’s complex CPU and associated code will require years of analysis. Now a full ICN ranger, she tests a new ARC model designed using her modifications. When she initiates the neural link, the suit’s AI greets her in a voice unmistakably reminiscent of Smith, even referencing her coffee preference (“three sugars”). When asked its name, it replies only, “Guess.” The film leaves open whether this is the original Smith resurrected or a new AI built in his image, but the emotional bond endures, suggesting hope for a future cooperative Alliance between humans and benevolent AI.
Throughout the film, the visual spectacle of futuristic cityscapes, mech combat, and planetary vistas is contrasted with structural weaknesses in its storytelling. Critics call out predictable plotting, shallow character arcs, and thematic clichés, drawing parallels to franchises like *The Terminator* with Jennifer Lopez’s emotional performance as its most dynamic element. Despite this, the emotional core centred around trust, trauma, and redemption remains at the director’s heart, even if the execution falls short.
