Exterritorial is a German action thriller directed by Christian Zübert, starring Jeanne Goursaud as Sara Wulf, a former Special Forces soldier grappling with PTSD. The film unfolds as a tense, high-stakes mission to rescue her son, Josh, who mysteriously disappears within the U.S. Consulate in Frankfurt.
Sara Wulf, the sole survivor of a deadly ambush during her deployment in Afghanistan, she visits the U.S. Consulate in Frankfurt with her young son, Josh, to apply for a work visa. After leaving Josh in a designated playroom, she returns to find him missing. When she seeks assistance, consulate officials, including Regional Security Officer Eric Kynch and Sergeant Donovan, deny any record of Josh’s presence, and surveillance footage appears to corroborate their claims. Sara’s mental stability is questioned due to her PTSD, leading authorities to dismiss her concerns.

Refusing to leave without her son, Sara secretly remains within the consulate, initiating her own investigation. She encounters Irina, a woman secretly detained in the consulate for two months. Irina, whose real name is Kira Volkova, is the daughter of a Belarusian dissident and possesses incriminating evidence against the Russian government. In exchange for Sara’s help in escaping, Kira offers assistance in locating Josh.
As Sara delves deeper, she uncovers a conspiracy involving Eric Kynch, who had previously served alongside her in Afghanistan. Kynch had betrayed their unit by leaking information to the Taliban, resulting in the fatal ambush that left Sara as the sole survivor. To silence her and cover his tracks, Kynch orchestrated Josh’s kidnapping and manipulated surveillance footage to discredit her.

In a climactic confrontation, Sara records Kynch’s confession using a device belonging to his daughter, Aileen, whom Sara had briefly taken hostage to leverage information. Despite being wounded in the ensuing struggle, Sara successfully rescues Josh. Kynch is arrested, and the broader conspiracy involving other consulate officials is exposed. The film concludes with Sara and Josh relocating to the United States, symbolising a new beginning and Sara’s ongoing journey toward healing from her past traumas.
