On a remote island, a dangerous storm is coming. Lou (Allison Janney) is a quiet, hardened woman who lives alone in her house by the sea. She doesn’t talk much, but she watches the waves, and she watches people.
One night, a little girl named Vee (Ridley Asha Bateman) is kidnapped from her own home. Her mother, Hannah (Jurnee Smollett), is desperate she rushes to Lou’s door begging for help. At first, Lou hesitates. But something in Hannah’s fear, something in her voice, makes Lou act.

Lou and Hannah set off into the storm, following clues, peeling back lies. There are dark secrets of Lou’s past, Hannah’s fears, the kidnapper’s plan. Lou fights through wind and rain, navigating the island’s shadows, her own regrets, and the danger that’s closing in.
They track Vee to a lighthouse. Lou’s instincts kick in; she knows people, she knows danger, and she knows how to protect someone. In the final showdown Lou and Hannah work together. Lou’s strength, wisdom, and ruthlessness are tested. Hannah’s love for her daughter gives her courage she didn’t know she had.

In the end, Lou makes a sacrifice. She risks everything to get Vee back. Hannah and Vee survive, but things will never be the same. Lou walks away, a little more haunted, a little more understood.
