Toy Story 4 – Animated Movie Review

3 Min Read

The film opens by reminding us of Woody’s long-held belief: a toy’s life only has meaning when it is dedicated to a child. However, life with Bonnie is not what Woody expected. Once the beloved leader of Andy’s room, Woody now spends most of his days unnoticed in Bonnie’s closet, watching helplessly as she gravitates toward newer toys. This quiet rejection weighs heavily on him, forcing Woody to confront the painful reality that loyalty and love are not always returned in the same measure.

When Bonnie starts kindergarten, she creates Forky, a crude figure made from a plastic spork, pipe cleaners, and trash. Forky immediately spirals into an identity crisis, convinced he is garbage and repeatedly trying to throw himself away. Woody takes responsibility for Forky, not out of obligation, but because he sees in Forky the same confusion and fear he himself is experiencing. Protecting Forky becomes Woody’s way of holding onto his purpose.

During a family road trip, Forky escapes through a window, sending Woody on a dangerous solo mission. This journey leads Woody to an antique store filled with forgotten toys and memories of abandonment. There, he reunites with Bo Peep, who has reinvented herself as a confident, independent lost toy. Through Bo, Woody is introduced to a world where a toy’s worth is not tied to ownership, but to choice and freedom.

As Woody helps Forky understand that being there for Bonnie gives his life meaning, Woody himself faces a heartbreaking truth: his own role in Bonnie’s life is complete. In the final moments, Woody makes the most difficult decision of his existence by choosing not to return with his friends. He embraces a new identity, one shaped by self-discovery rather than duty, while ensuring that the toys he loves remain together and cared for.
