THE CASAGRANDES MOVIE – NETFLIX ANIMATION REVIEW

The Casagrandes Movie is a 2024 animated fantasy-comedy film based on the Nickelodeon series The Casagrandes. Directed by Miguel Puga and released on Netflix on March 22, 2024, the movie serves as the series finale and continues the adventures of Ronnie Anne Santiago and her family.

Ronnie Anne Santiago, now 12 years old, is excited to spend her “Summer of 12” at the thrilling theme park Xtreme Eddie’s with her best friend, Sid Chang. However, her plans are upended when her family surprises her with a trip to Japunda, Mexico, to visit her great-grandmother, Mama Lupe.

In Mexico, Ronnie Anne becomes intrigued by a necklace sold by a local shopkeeper, who claims it connects humans to the gods. Despite her mother Maria’s skepticism, Ronnie Anne secretly purchases the necklace.

At Mama Lupe’s home, Ronnie Anne learns about Mount Punguari, named after a rebellious demigoddess who was turned to stone by her mother, Sisiki, to prevent her from causing a catastrophe. Curious, Ronnie Anne visits the mountain and, during a skateboarding mishap, breaks the necklace, inadvertently releasing Punguari.

Punguari, disguised as a girl named Shara, befriends Ronnie Anne and tricks her into helping retrieve a powerful mask that grants godhood. Upon obtaining the mask, Punguari reveals her true identity and traps Ronnie Anne in a mystical realm.

With the help of her grandfather Hector, who discovers her through a magical mirror, Ronnie Anne escapes and reunites with her family. She realizes that Punguari’s actions are unintentionally aiding the rise of Ucumu, the god of the underworld. Determined to stop the impending disaster, Ronnie Anne confronts Punguari and convinces her of the truth.

Together, they battle Ucumu, with the Casagrande family joining the fight using their unique skills and ancient artifacts. In the end, they successfully defeat Ucumu, seal the cracks in the earth, and restore balance.

The film concludes with the Festival of the New Fire on Mama Lupe’s island, celebrating their victory. Maria presents Ronnie Anne with a new gemstone as Punguari, Sisiki, and Chipiri watch the festivities from afar.
