Meeting Funmi’s parents is a romantic comedy film following Funmi who traveled from the United States to Lagos, Nigeria bringing along her Caucasian fiancé, Jason, to introduce him to her traditional Yoruba family. Funmi’s father strongly opposes having an “Oyinbo”(foreign) son-in-law and is set on marrying a fellow Nigerian.

Comic and awkward moments ensue as Jason tries to navigate local customs, greetings and traditional Nigerian dishes like gbegiri soup. Sending an opening in the family’s resistance, Funmi’s charismatic and formerly cheating boyfriend, Ayo( the classic “Yoruba demon”) reappears.
Ayo claims he has changed and tries hard to win Funmi back, finding an unexpected ally in her father, who clearly prefers him over the American fiancé. Funmi finds herself torn between respecting her family’s cultural expectations and following her heart with Jason.

As tension mounts, it becomes clear that Jason is not quite the flawless partner he initially appeared to be, adding layers of complication to Funmi’s choice. The film moves through a series of emotional tests and family arguments that force everyone to rethink their rigid stances on love, tradition and modern cross-cultural relationships.
