“A Widow’s Game” (2025) is a Spanish psychological crime thriller directed by Carlos Sedes, based on the real-life 2017 murder case known as the “Crime of Patraix.”
Set in Valencia, Spain, the story begins with the brutal murder of Arturo, a 36-year-old engineer, found stabbed multiple times in a parking garage on August 16, 2017. Initially perceived as a crime of passion or a robbery gone wrong, the investigation takes a turn when inconsistencies arise in the accounts provided by Arturo’s widow, Maje.

Maje, a seemingly devoted nurse, is revealed to be leading a double life, engaging in multiple extramarital affairs. Among her lovers is Salva, a fellow nurse who becomes deeply infatuated with her. Maje manipulates Salva by portraying Arturo as abusive, convincing him that eliminating her husband is the only escape from her torment. Driven by obsession and Maje’s deceit, Salva agrees to commit the murder.

Inspector Eva Torres leads the homicide investigation, uncovering Maje’s web of lies through meticulous police work, including wiretaps and surveillance. Salva initially confesses to acting alone but later reveals Maje’s role in orchestrating the murder after discovering her continued infidelity, even while he was incarcerated.

The trial exposes the depth of Maje’s manipulation and the extent of Salva’s involvement. In 2019, Maje is sentenced to 22 years in prison, while Salva receives a 17-year sentence. The film concludes with real footage from the trial, providing a stark reminder of the true events that inspired the story.
