Movie Review – Jumanji

5 Min Read

Although the first Jumanji (2017) movie was released 3 years ago it felt like forever, i’d like to admit that when Jumanji Next Level started i didn’t really understand what was going on, could it be that the first installment of Jumanji had no impact on me, was it so unmemorable that i didn’t remember the plot, and the characters?

Well, you’ll know in a few minutes but first lets check out the trailer one more time.

Welcome back!

When Spencer goes back into the fantastical world of Jumanji, pals Martha, Fridge and Bethany re-enter the game to bring him home. But the game is now broken — and fighting back. Everything the friends know about Jumanji is about to change, as they soon discover there’s more obstacles and more danger to overcome.

This sequel of Jumanji was directed by Jake Kasden and written by him, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. I love the way they started and then proceed into the main setting of the movie ‘ the Jumanji game” similar entry style like the first movie only that this time around a few roles were switched – his grouchy grandfather played by Danny DeVito and his business partner Danny Glover joined in on the fun, all thanks to the cartridge malfunction.

Is it just me or this Jumanji game is just defective? think back to Jumanji (1995)

In-game, that means Johnson’s Bravestone and Kevin Hart’s Mouse had to adopt the mannerisms and impression of Danny’s DeVito and Glover respectively — They both really tapped into the old timer in them and it was an absolute delight to watch.

It didn’t take long for the lead actors ; Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan to find their groove again within the game world. Their chemistry is off the charts and with a new twist to the body-swapping theme this time around, they get to play different personas. Once again, Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart make a great pair, feeding off each other’s charisma – its no surprise they are such good friends in real life.

Remember the promotional stunt for Jumanji : The Next Level Click Me

The older duo shows off their experience, DeVito & Glover steals every scene, even their squabbles from the real world take up a king’s share in the emotional conflict in the film.  Jack Black displays his range in more ways than one ( as a result of the multiple body swaps) , while Karen Gillan revels in the physicality of her performance. Another character worth of mentioning is Awkwafina she played a new in – game character ; a thief with unusual weaknesses that do not match her profession. You probably remember her from Crazy Rich Asians & Oceans 8.

All things considered, Jumanji : The Next Level is refreshing to watch.

Final verdict below!

Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Awkwafina, Alex Wolff Nick Jonas, Karren Gillian, Morgan Turner and many more

Genre: Action, Adventure, & Comedy

Director: Jake Kasdan

Ratings: PG 13 (for adventure, action, suggestive contents and some languages)

Written by: Jake Kasdan, Jeff Pinker, Scott Rosenberg

Runtime: 100 minutes

Studio: Sony Pictures

Despite the amazing casts , CGI & Plot twists . The movie wasn’t perfect, the structure of the film already takes away the surprise element. In addition , like the prequel the movie lacks a formidable villain. While others may argue that the movie is all about the shenanigans and adventures of the characters,  it would’t hurt to have a worthy villain ; at least one with a stronger character arc.

So for the Kevin and Dwanye fans out there I am sure you would enjoy this movie as always and have a very good laugh with the cast. I would score the movie 8/10 because generally it wasn’t a bad movie.
