The Best and the worst of 2016 movies and their Gross Earnings
The 2016 movie Industry was at its best this year, the year started on a very good note, they were some very good block buster movies and off course the ones that didn’t make it big. The very good and dynamic thing about this industry is that it can only get better. You make mistakes this year, you go back to the drawing board, correct your errors and make sure you produce a better movie to surpass the expectations of your viewers.
This year producers have seen the taste and expectations of their viewers evolve and much more expected from the actors and producers. Consumers do not want to watch any boring, depressing movie, it’s either you kill it by surpassing expectations or you don’t bother producing at all to avoid the rant and annoyance of your fans on social media. It’s a case of consumers requesting for more value for their money, they want to be entertained with world class thrilling movies, where they can be kept under suspense, get thrilled, have fun and at the same cost. They want well edited, scripted and produced movies with the best actors and every detail in perfect order.
2016 was built on so much demand and expectations from the producers, while some were met, some fell short and couldn’t even break even. It would be incomplete to end this year without a recap of what went down this year. So allow me to take you down memory lane to see if you remember the movies that made it to the cinemas this year. We will look at the top hollywood movies and the top Nollywood movies, not forgetting to mention the ones that weren’t just it for us.
To my top Hollywood movies grossing it big in earning we will start with the biggest movie this year Captain America with the largest gross earning of over $1B dollars in cinemas and across the globe making it one of the top 10movies in history to cross the $1b dollars earnings. There was Finding Dory for kids with over $400m dollars, Ride Along 2 with $41m, Fantastic beasts and where to find them with $774m and still counting, Xmen Apocalypse with $543m, Central Intelligence with $100m, Me before you with $5.6m, War Dogs with $300m, and 13 hours. To end the year Rougue 1 the star wars movie has grossed over $290m in just 2 weeks with expectations of more earnings, despite the good earning for Rougue so far, they actually need $841m to at least break even.
To my list of not ok movies we have Ghost busters, Cell, Independence, Never let go and for most people Momentum which made the lowest income this year of less than $50,000. They were just some things wrong about these movie and their fans weren’t impressed at all.
A recap into the Nollywood industry my top Naija movies this year we’re The wedding party with over N120m naira in just 2weeks not bad at all for a Nigerian movie. The movie 76, Couple of Days early this year, Arbitration, It’s her day, Any other Monday, And Surulere made it pretty big this year. To the movies that didn’t kill it for me this year we have Bro Jekwu and When love happens again, at the end of the movie most people kept asking themselves what just happened here? They just didn’t get it neither did I.
It’s an obvious fact that 2016 has being an interesting year; it really changed the face of the movie industry. While some Hollywood producers smiled to the Bank for snatching their targets the likes of Captain America with over a billion dollars, some like Momentum have nothing to show for their movies, they couldn’t even cover the cost nor break even. On the other hand the Nigerian movie industry has seen immerse growth as more and more Nigerians are now seeing the huge importance of supporting our own, by going to the cinemas to watch Nigerian movies. We have seen substantial growth considering where we started from a few years ago. Our mindsets are evolving and more people want to be associated with Nigerian movies. It’s becoming a thing of prestige and pride for many Nigerians to talk about Nigerian movies and I am proud of the producers who are taking time to dish out world class movies, we will get there in just a very short time.
Despite the fact that some movies did poorly this year we have definitely seen movies that surpassed the expectations of the producers in gross earnings, the likes of The wedding party with millions of naira in just 2 weeks. I am extremely very happy and excited to end this year’s movie review with great joy and satisfaction, using this opportunity to thank all the actors. Actresses, producers and directors for their enormous efforts in making sure we are entertained all through the year and looking forward to a fantastic movie year come 2017.
