One day, Racine receives a letter from their mother, Ruby, who is actually alive and on her deathbed in the South.
Upon visiting her, they find Ruby heavily scarred, wrapped in elegant bandages and surrounded by attendants. Still harboring resentment, she gives them a singular, dying directive: to find their father and kill him. Because their mother created them, they view her as God compelling the twins to honor her wishes. While Anaia is initially hesitant, Racine pushes them forward, and the two embark on a cross-country revenge quest.
