THE RENEVANT – HOLLYWOOD MOVIE REVIEW

3 Min Read

The Revenant is a survival and revenge epic movie. The movie opens in 1823, a full team of fur trappers led by captain Andrew Henry is hunting in the uncharted American wilderness.

The camp is suddenly ambushed by a band of Arikara warriors, who are desperately searching for their abducted chief’s daughter. The devastating attack forced the surviving trappers to flee down the river in a boat, abandoning most of their pelts.

Knowing the territory well, the party’s expert guide, Hugh Glass, advises the group to travel the rest of the way on foot to avoid further river ambushes. While scouting alone in the forest, Glass is brutally attacked and nearly killed by a protective grizzly bear. He manages to kill the bear but is left with horrific, life-threatening injuries.

The trappers carry the wounded Glass but his condition severely slows their escape. Realizing that carrying him is endangering the entire group, Captain Henry offers a hefty reward to anyone willing to stay behind with Glass until he dies and give him a proper burial. John Fitzgerald, a greedy and selfish trapper, volunteers alongside young Jim Bridger and Glass’s half-Pawnee don, Hawk.

Driven purely by grief and the desire for vengeance, Glass wakes up in his grave and forces his broken, infected body to survive. He cauterizes his own wounds, scavenges for raw food(including a bison liver) and crawls hundreds of miles through the freezing, unforgiving snow. Along the way, he encounters a Native American named Hikuc, who helps nurse him, but Hikuc is later hanged by French trappers, Glass manages to survive multiple encounters with French fur traders and hostile warriors, eventually floating down an icy river to safety.

Glad miraculously reaches the Fort Kiowa outpost, shocking the trappers who assumed he was dead. When Captain Henry realized the truth about Fitzgerald’s betrayal, he organized a search party, but Fitzgerald had already deserted the fort.

Glass and Captain Henry split up to track Fitzgerald. Glass eventually corners Fitzgerald near a river, and the two engage in a brutal, bloody, hand-to-hand fight. After being badly wounded, Fitzgerald managed to retreat into the woods, but Glass pursued him into Arikara territory. Fitzgerald is finally killed by the Arikara warriors, who spare Glass out of respect for his journey, having found and rescued the kidnapped daughter of their chief. Glass, having achieved his revenge, slowly wanders off into the snowy mountains, leaving his fate to the wilderness.
