BLACK ROSE – NOLLYWOOD MOVIE REVIEW

Black rose is a gripping drama following a virtuous, hardworking young woman trying to escape poverty. When she falls for a wealthy and charming man, she discovers he is tied to the criminal underworld, ultimately transforming her into something recognizable.

Rose and her family struggle to survive in severe poverty following the death of her father. To make ends meet, Rose and her mother cook and sell food in their community, Rose watches her sister, Ugo engage in transactional sex to help feed the family but Rose is determined to make a better life without ever selling her dignity.

During her daily life, Rose meets a handsome and generous customer named Desmond who sweeps her off her feet. Desperate to find a savior who can rescue her family from their struggles, she falls in love with him. Initially, Desmond provides the perfect fairy-tale lifestyle, giving her luxury and stability she only ever dreamed of. However, the illusion quickly shatters when Rose is unknowingly dragged into Desmond’s dark and illicit world.

Desmond isn’t just a wealthy businessman, he is deeply involved in a criminal underworld including sexual grooming and human trafficking. He deliberately grooms Rose, stripping away her innocence and turning her into a hardened version of herself- someone her own mother can barely recognize. As Rose becomes ensnared in his web of lies, decor and betrayal, she begins to lose the virtuous moral compass her mother instilled in her.

Trapped in a life she never chose, Rose struggles to survive and eventually finds herself forced to confront the harsh reality of her choices. The film culminates in a deeply emotional climax where Rose acknowledges the harsh hand life dealt her, but ultimately takes accountability for the path she took. It ends on a reflective, cautionary note highlighting themes of resilience, the unfairness of poverty and the importance of personal destiny.
