The story begins in a rough, cold Gotham City where Arthur Fleck, a lonely man with a medical condition that makes him laugh at the wrong time, tries to survive each day. He works as a clown, holding signs on the street and visiting children’s hospitals, but his life is full of pain. People insult him, beat him, and treat him like he is not human. He lives with his sick mother in a small apartment, taking care of her while dreaming of being a stand-up comedian someday.

While Arthur moves through the city, we see how bad everything is around him crime rising, garbage everywhere, people angry. Arthur’s life slowly gets worse. He loses his job after one accident at work. A group of rich young men attack him on a train at night. Something snaps inside him, and he fights back for the first time in his life. This moment starts a chain of events that he never planned. The city begins to talk about a masked killer on the train, and some people start calling him a hero without even knowing who he is.

Arthur’s mind becomes more confused. He starts to imagine things that are not real. He believes a woman down the hall likes him, even though she barely knows him. He discovers secrets about his mother, about his childhood, and about who he truly is. Every truth hurts him deeply and pushes him further away from the person he used to be.

The turning point comes when Arthur gets invited to a live TV show hosted by Murray Franklin, someone he once admired. Instead of becoming the comedian he dreamed of, the show becomes a moment where he releases all his anger and pain in front of the whole world. What begins as a sad life story ends in chaos as the city reacts to him, riots fill the streets, and Gotham burns. In the end, he walks away into the chaos he helped create. He doesn’t know if his message will fix anything. Maybe no one will care. But he doesn’t have to hide anymore. The world knows the joke is over.
