Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio – Animated Movie Review

A darker, deeper retelling of the classic story. It follows a wooden boy learning about life, love, and loss in a world filled with war, grief, and growing pains.

Geppetto is a lonely old woodcarver who once had a son. But the boy died suddenly, and the world never felt right after that. Geppetto lives with a quiet sadness, walking through empty streets, carving wood to stop himself from thinking too much. His life feels empty, heavy, and still.

One night, in a burst of grief and wine, he cuts down a tree and carves a wooden boy from it. The workshop smells like fresh wood and rain. He works all night, shaping the creature with shaking hands, pouring his pain into every line. When dawn comes, he collapses beside it.

A magical spirit watches from above. She sees his grief, his love, and the longing hidden inside his rough creation. She touches the wooden boy and breathes life into him. His eyes open. His limbs twitch. He stands, confused but full of energy. This is Pinocchio.

Pinocchio is messy, loud, curious, and full of life. He asks too many questions. He runs into the street, bumps into people, and laughs at everything. Geppetto is shocked, even scared. He wanted a son, yes, but not like this. But Pinocchio wants one thing: to make Geppetto proud.

The world around them is tough. Soldiers march in the streets. War is coming. And people don’t accept Pinocchio easily. Some see him as a monster. Others want to use him. A greedy circus owner discovers Pinocchio’s special nature and tries to trap him. Soldiers want him for his strange abilities. Everyone wants a piece of him.

Pinocchio, confused and hopeful, tries to please everyone. He performs. He dances. He risks himself for others. But each time, he learns something about humans their kindness, cruelty, fear, and greed. Along the way, he befriends a small talking cricket who becomes his guide, whispering wisdom when Pinocchio feels lost.

The emotional heart comes when Pinocchio finally understands what it means to be alive not in body, but in spirit. He learns that life is short. That love is painful. That people break, but they also heal. He discovers that Geppetto, despite all his flaws, truly loves him.

In the powerful final act, Pinocchio risks everything to save Geppetto from danger. He puts himself in harm’s way, proving that even a wooden boy can have the heart of a real child. The ending is gentle and quiet: Geppetto and Pinocchio walking home together under a soft sunrise, learning to accept each other exactly as they are.
