Ponzi
Sometimes it’s quiet of a hustle choosing a Nigerian movie as you just have to make do with what you have available in the cinema. This was the typical case with this movie.
Although I had seen the trailers here and there I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the movie. It reminded me so much about “Omo Ghetto” of December which till now is still in the cinema.
Well, from the trailer I knew it was going to be comedy but I wasn’t sure it would make me laugh.
The movie started with a young lady narrating a story and then the cast acting it out, a case of talk, pause and act, not one we were familiar with as it isn’t a common trend here in Nigeria. It felt nice to see a new twist to our storytelling. It was nice but there was something not quite right about the entire thing.
As she narrated along the line I found out she also played the role of the daughter of the very wealthy man who threw out money regularly to the people. It was nice to see our famous MC Macaroni play a lead role here. He was married with his wife expecting a baby so they needed money desperately. His younger brother was also living with them and not doing much. Everyone in the movie was just looking for quick ways to make money.
Timini Egbuson was Mr. Macaroni’s kid brother who was searching for a job and spent all his income daily on sport betting hoping he would win a mega amount. Along the line, the rich man’s lost son from America came to Nigeria, made friends with everyone and begins to tell them about a quick way of doubling their money, little did they know that he wanted to run away with their money.
You will need to watch the entire comedy movie to see how they even went to the extent of borrowing to invest in the quick scheme that left everyone burnt.
Cast: Mr Macaroni, Timini Egbuson, Broda Shaggi, Jide Kosoko, Amanda Dara, Chinyere Wilfred, Eso Dike
Genre: Comedy
Director: Kayode Kasum
Runtime: 108 minutes
Release Date: 2021
To my verdict I would score this movie 5.5/10. For me, there was something not just right and some pieces missing that didn’t completely click.
Though loads of people were laughing in the cinema, I just felt they could have done better. I know I might be crucified but I really expected more than I got especially for the caliber of actors I saw in the movie.
The cast and crew were ok and the cinematography was good, the storyline didn’t just cut it out rightly hence my score. Well if you love Nigerian comedy movie you might want to try this out and do not forget to leave us a comment of what you think about it.
