Gangs of Lagos – A Nollywood Movie Review

3 Min Read

A gripping urban action-drama, Gangs of Lagos blends friendship, betrayal, and ambition against the backdrop of a city that never sleeps. The film paints Lagos as a living, breathing character chaotic, beautiful, and merciless all at once.

The story begins with three young boys Obalola, Ify, and Gift growing up in the rough neighborhood of Isale Eko. Orphaned and left vulnerable, they fall under the protection of street gangs, where survival is traded for loyalty. From childhood, they are exposed to the brutal realities of life on the streets: violence, extortion, and the seductive pull of power.

Obalola, naturally sharp and strategic, quickly rises in the ranks, catching the eye of Kazeem, a feared gang leader who sees in him both promise and threat. Ify, the dreamer of the trio, yearns for a way out, seeking to chase a life beyond gang violence, while Gift is caught in between tough, ambitious, but tethered to her loyalty to her friends. Together, they form a fragile bond that holds them steady through the storm of Lagos street life.

As elections approach, the gangs become pawns in the hands of politicians, used to intimidate voters and settle political scores. Obalola and his friends are dragged deeper into the cycle of violence, forced to choose between loyalty to their mentors and survival in a corrupt system. Betrayal creeps in from unexpected corners, and friendships that once seemed unbreakable begin to fracture under pressure.

The film’s turning point comes when a devastating act of betrayal shakes Obalola to his core. The fallout is bloody and irreversible, forcing him into a final confrontation that blurs the line between vengeance and justice. The closing moments of Gangs of Lagos are both explosive and heartbreaking Lagos itself standing tall as both the stage and the ultimate survivor, while the lives of its children are swallowed by its unforgiving hunger.
